Horses are great animals that love to roam free in the farms and open grasslands. In cold conditions and rainy climate, every owner wants to protect the horse so that it does not get affected be the weather. In such cases, the best solution is to get your horse a good turnout rug. This rug will not only protect your horse in rains but also in cold wintery conditions too.

These turnout rugs can be classified into three categories based on their weights. The heavy weight rugs have over 300 grams of filling that keeps the horse nice and warm in biting cold conditions. The lightweight rugs have up to 150 grams of filling and are more to protect from rain with some warmth. The medium weight rugs are in between for wet but not so cold conditions. You can pick one of these depending how the local weather changes in your area.

If the seasonal changes are quite drastic, then a single rug will not solve your problem. In that case, you can look at using layers to suit the weather. What you could do is purchase a good quality lightweight rug and some blankets or under rugs. If it starts to get too cold, just cover the horse with under rugs: more than one if necessary and finally to protect from the weather and wetness, cover it with the lightweight rug. That will solve the problem in extreme cold conditions. In summer rain, just use the lightweight rug and it will work just fine.

The important thing in any rug is its waterproof feature and comfort. All rugs tend to have long lasting water proof coating, so you really do not have to re coat the rug every year. The comfort part is really important. Some of the rugs are designed in parts to allow maximum freedom for the horse to move. Some others use frills to provide that extra space.

Some rugs come in multiple pieces to cover different part of the horse body separately to ensure good movement. If you are purchasing such a rug, you must ensure that the piece of the rug that will cover the entire body is large enough to overlap individual smaller pieces too. This way there will be no exposed part on the horse to affect it adversely.

Other rugs tend to be a single unit to avoid gaps in the design. In such case, you must ensure that the rug is large enough to allow free movement for the horse and at the same time not too loose. The rug must cover the belly completely.

One of the problems with using such rugs is that the horse may graze near the fence and branches which can tear the rug. The modern, good quality rugs that are rip resistant and you must always prefer these. These will ensure that they serve you well are deliver good value for money.

In conclusion, turnout rug is great accessories to have if you own horses. They are great for all weathers. They can protect your horse in rain as well as winters. A well select rug will give your horse the freedom to roam out in your farm all year round.

Many horse owners choose to use a turnout rug when letting their animals out into the pasture during inclement weather. Horse rugs help to protect your animal from rain, without overheating.
