Getting Treatment for Horse Colic

by Mae Summerville

Like infants when they get colicky, horses will also be screaming and crying which would be alright if they did not add pacing and stomping, which can not only threaten other individuals who go close to them but also themselves.

Because of the agony, horses, lose a sense of what they are doing and can be in danger for serious injury in this type of situation. individuals who love, breed, or ride horses have heard of intestinal colic. It would have been noted in books and journals on equine health because colic is a veterinary emergency due to the way horses react to the agony in the gut.

The first type of horse colic is irregular or that which arises from abnormal wind which is the less severe type. The other one is the obstructive colic, which is often caused by blockages in some parts of their body and may be in the form of displacements or distortions in their muscular tissues.

It can also be caused by impactions in the guts or in the large colons and often, this will require treatment, either with oil and a medicine or in other more severe instances, fluid therapy. There is a type of intestinal colic which stems from worms and another type which comes similar to that experienced when a baby has eaten overmuch.

As mentioned above, humans and horses are not formed in the same way so if they suffer from intestinal colic, it could get really severe. Horses can’t deal with the tummy pressure the way mankind can, and they are not able to vomit. Over time, the pressure builds and causes dilatation that will eventually require decompression. Horses have tiny anatomical parts, especially in their digestive system, which often causes them to become blocked or impacted.

Their blood takes a long circuitous route which aids in the establishment of impactions so they are likely to be obstructed. Because of this, the animal can die due to a lack of blood flow and deficiency of oxygen to the heart. Horses are highly sensitive to bacteria, particularly the ones that enter their bodies and go to their guts. The balance achieved by bacteria in the gut lining is so delicate that only a slight change in food or vitamins can cause issues.
