Equestrian Saddle ” Top 5 Western Saddles: Designed to Function

by Lisa Blackstone

Equestrian saddle, also known as horse riding saddle, is a seat used by a rider on the back of the horse. This seat is typically made of leather. It comes in many different types such as English saddles, Western saddles, Military saddles, Asian saddles and many others. In this article, I will be discussing about the Western saddles.

A Western saddle is a kind of equestrian saddle which refers to the one that is used on horses on working cattle ranches. Also known as a cowboy saddle, it is designed for security and comfort. This saddle is popular throughout the United States, particularly in the west. Western saddles are also used in different western riding activities today.

There are many types of Western Saddles, which vary in looks and style depending on their purposes. Some horse saddles are used for general purposes while others provide more freedom of movement. These are also those which provide security for the rider.

Western saddles include endurance saddles, trail saddles and equitation saddles. But the most popular are the show saddles, the roping saddles, the cutting saddles, the reining saddles and the barrel racing saddles.

A show saddle is a deep padded supportive structure that features additional deep leather tooling and silver decorations. It is made with deep padded seat to provide the rider comfort as well as the appearance of smooth ride. Deep leather tooling and silver decorations were added to give the saddle a sleek look.

The additional deep leather tooling and silver decorations in show saddles are typically placed on skirts, cantle, horn, stirrups and fork or pommel. With the additional deep leather tooling and silver decorations, Western shows saddles have become a fashion item rather than a support for riders.

The roping saddle is an equestrian saddle designed in a manner that will help the rider to chase, to rope and to tie cows to the horn of the saddle. This type of Western saddle can provide riders the greatest freedom of movement as it has a heavy and sturdy structure. Also it features thicker and higher horn and low cantle and slick fork.

Roping saddles are made heavy and sturdy so that they can withstand the pressure of the cow. The horns in roping saddles are made thicker for strength and higher to allow the rope to be tied more easily. They have lower cantles and slick forks to enable the rider to easily dismount.

A cutting saddle is a type of Western saddle that is used to isolate a cow from a larger herd. In isolating cows, riders have to make short stops and turns. This is why the cutting saddle is designed with deep seat and wide swells. Its free swinging fenders are made for balance, while its tall and thin horns are made for easy grip.

A reining saddle is Western saddle that is used for reining, a western riding competition for horses where the riders guide the horses through a precise pattern of circles, spins, and stops. It has a lower horn and fork to avoid interference with the reins. Its seat is also low but shaped to enable the rider to shift himself or herself during sliding stops. Its skirts are cut out for closer leg communication.

A barrel racing saddle is a Western saddle that is used for barrel racing. Barrel racing is a rodeo event in which a rider guides a horse and tries to complete a pattern around preset barrels in the fastest time. This saddle is made to give the rider maximum speed and maneurability.

Barrel racing saddles are lighter and feature higher forks and cantles, which help keep riders in place. These equestrian saddles have thin and taller horns and free swinging fenders. These features help riders to take a turn and to balance.
